Common Knowledge

Past Events

Though not everyone within the Three is literate or numerate the skills are nevertheless widely available and comparatively easy to learn. As such even the common person has a basic understanding of the past and Articles of Industry. Though a historian will invariably be able to tell you more, the commoner will have a simplistic knowledge of when Alchemy was recently truly discovered amongst Humankind and the Guild-pact is. The following is a simple knowledge that everyone will know and what commoners are likely to think - remember, like all handouts it isn’t necessarily the entirety of the truth.

TIMELINE

The Human calendar, used all over the Three and adopted by even the Dwarrow, Hob and Troll, is formed from the year of the signing of the Guild-pact and the agreement between the Guilds of the Articles of Industry. It is divided into two main segments (like all good time-lines) - B.G. (Before Guild-pact) and A.G. (After Guild-pact). The Guild-pact was signed roughly 2,500 years ago.

OOC note: Time between the world of Erna and our world travels at the same speed. The year 2044 A.G. is equal to the year A.D. 2011 in our world. As with the real world, the following time-line contains a list of dates of important events - but, as with the real world, these are reference points (A.D. 1066, for example, was the Battle of Hastings, but the actually war effort had gone on for more than 3 years previously). N.B. Where the following refers to ‘Humans’ this is typically Humans alongside Trolls and occasional other races. Where it refers to the ‘Three’ one can safely assume Dwarrow are involved as well.

Important Dates

201 B.G - The Barter of Alchemists. This forms the basis of all Alchemy.

c.99 B.G. - The Guild War is fought. Three Houses are destroyed utterly. It lasts around 3 years.

Year 0 - The Guild-pact is signed. At the end of the year, 1 A.G. the Articles of Industry is formalised with the Church.

10 A.G. - The Erotisos is set up without Senate approval.

c.15-500 A.G. - The Burned Epoch. Mages and Alchemists across the Three are burned, hanged and drowned in mass murder by the Erotisos and rouge groups across the continent. Dwarrow and Hob suffer perhaps the worst of it - the Dwarrow flee to the outreaches of Illyria and across the seas to Getae and Dacia, whilst the Hob retreat to Infernum by crossing the White Mountains - avoiding Halflings narrowly. The whole continent descends into a Dark Age - history is lost and civil war is common. Technology takes a huge step backwards.

c.500 A.G. - The Foundations. The Erotisos is formalised and vast laws are put in place to restrict it. The Citadel is built on the Storm Isle off the south coast of Macedonia.

600 A.G. - The Conquests. The Church of Six begins to gain adherents within the outlying City States and Maesia. Old factories are reclaimed by the Church and converted into temples and shrines. It gains a foothold in society and within a few years has the power to challenge the Church of One.

700 A.G. - The Reformation. Thracia declares its allegiance to the Church of Six, angering the Church of One. A holy war is fought between adherents and the Church of One falls into decline. It is still permissible and used frequently across the Three but is considered heretical by much of the Church of Six. Today it is worship of the One is considered distasteful in polite conversation.

800-1000 A.G. - The Age of Discovery. The lands of the Three journey to the other lands and great expeditions are mounted. Many City-States compete with one another, leading to a series of small wars across Dacia and Getae as each fleet tries to impose their way of life on the lands they find.

1200 A.G - The Enlightenment. The Age of Reason begins and ushers in a new scientific age, freeing much of the population from the constraints of the Church. New Guilds are formed (such as the Guild Bank, Guild of Merchants and the House of Law) and the older Guilds open their doors to the public for the first time. The Social Welfare Fund is establish and Parliament is formalised. The Church and religious organisation are restricted in government.

c.1600 A.G. - The Battle of Scars. For a handful of decades the Dacians and the Three have battles over control of the water and the importance of naval power increases. Eventually shipping rights, areas and fishing claims are established and the Three and Dacia formalise an agreement. All the while the piratical activities of the First Men Reavers increases and damages are high.

c.1772 A.G. - The Battle of Maker’s Peak. After centuries of being lost to the Three the Halflings are reintroduced. Skirmishes between Humans and Halflings are common until the Battle of Maker’s Peak. Maker’s Peak is the highest peak of the White Mountains, approximately 7,800 feet high (the height of Everest) and is said to have been made by the primal Creator before He departed from the world. Near to the base of Maker’s Peak is a pass through which the Iniki were attacked by General Gaidres. Gaidres lost, but only marginally and retreated. In desperation the Iniki collapsed part of the mountain on him. The Three attempt to re-establish contact with the Iniki and trade agreements are made.

1896 A.G. - A massive earthquake shocks most of the northlands and some of Macedonia. The Wall forms cracks and in desperation many of the Three turn to make skirmish runs for food and shelter against the Iniki, Hob and Dwarrow races. In recompense the Three grants both the Dwarrow and Hob races freedom within its lands and in turn begins to teach Iniki the ways of Alchemy and faith. The Iniki combine their religion with that of the Six - being already surprisingly similar.

c.1900 A.G. - The Industrial Age. Overcoming the last of the Articles of Industry by using clockwork, the Three begins a new age of invention. It is slow, for much is held back by the Senate and the Church but the Three begins to take up the clockwork of the Barter of Alchemists and life becomes easier for many. Clockwork weaponry becomes more prevalent and easier to obtain, and costs for many things begins to drop.

1984 A.G. - With their new-found wealth some traders bargain with the Black Brothers (who are beginning to wonder why their Order was established) to go north of the Wall and search for Dragon-glass and other substances, which are extremely rare south but said to be more common in Infernum. The traders indeed find these substances and become rich, very quickly.

2034 A.G - Father Brekison publishes his heretical work ‘The Barter of Alchemists’ and is excommunicated. The greatest witch-hunt since the Burned Epoch ensues.

2038 A.G. - Contact with the villages north of the Wall ceases. No one hears anything from this date onwards. This is largely ignored and no one seems particularly concerned - after all, the villagers north chose to leave the old rules and protection of the Law behind and all of them took their remaining family.

2042 A.G. - Devoted Father Davian Augustine Claudius steals money from the Church funds and begins to gather crew for an expedition north, for reasons unknown. A Dwarrow camp of the Nyros family is found butchered near to the Stone-towns - their bodies attacked by weaponry unlike weapons of the south or Human weaponry.
